The Canadian Red Cross is supporting Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities facing extreme circumstances during the current COVID-19 pandemic. We have implemented a collaborative approach to provide immediate and scalable support to LTC facilities and their residents.  We are hiring full-time 3 month term positions, with the possibility for extension, for LTC facilities within the national capital region of Ontario.   

As an Occupational Health & Safety Advisor, you will be a vital member of the CRC Crisis Response team and report to the Site Manager.  The position will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Canadian Red Cross’s national health and safety vision and goals by supporting geographic and programmatic leaders and other specialist functions by implementing the CRC’s Occupational Health & Safety program.  This position is responsible for maintaining and monitoring compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety (“OHS”) legislation and regulation.

In this role you will:

  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of national and provincial OHS management systems.
  • Provide health & safety counsel and coordination to management in support of CRC personnel to ensure workplace safety and injury prevention.
  • Perform regulatory and hazard/risk assessments which will require travel to various sites of active emergency response operations (ex: COVID-19 testing sites, Long-Term Care homes, Indigenous Communities, etc.).
  • Liaise closely and collaborate with CRC Public Health Specialists on the Exposure Control and Infection Control Plans and standards.  Engage with Facilities and/or Logistics colleagues as applicable.
  • Collect, measure and analyze provincial and site metrics and performance indicators to identify trends, frequency and severity for continuous improvement and corrective measures.  Assist geographic and programmatic leaders develop action plans for improvement.
  • Assist in the development of standardized safety briefings, systems, policies, training, safety campaigns and programs to influence our proactive safety culture, reduce risk, and increase the health, safety and well-being of CRC personnel.
  • Responsible for maintaining and monitoring compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety (“OHS”) legislation and regulation.
  • Liaise with Risk Services to advance workplace incident reporting requirements and assist supervisors in the investigation of incidents to determine root cause and document lessons learned.
  • Support and collaborate with People Services and management as needed for any health and safety related functions including workers’ compensation.
  • Support other Red Cross initiatives to provide a coordinated team effort in meeting the needs of the most vulnerable in the community.

We’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or related discipline, or a combination of education and management experience that would be considered equivalent.
  • Minimum of three to five (3-5) years of experience in an OHS role.
  • Canadian Health & Safety Consultants designation is considered an asset.
  • Ability to travel within province and potentially within Canada in support of active emergencies.
  • Up to date knowledge and understanding of OHS legislation, best practices and trends.
  • Resiliency and adaptability to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment.   
  • Experience in facilitating and presenting training sessions is a requirement. 
  • Able to coordinate with authorities and foster effective internal working relationships with in a matrix environment.
  • Strong team work as well as demonstrated time management skills.  
  • Excellent communication skills with fluency (speaking, reading and writing) in English is essential; fluency in French is required based on province of work.
  • Computer and numerical literacy, comfort working with data bases and MS Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to complete a satisfactory Enhanced Police Information Check (EPIC).
  • Must be able to pass required confidential Health Screening and COVID testing.
  • Current First Aid Certification or willingness to take training.
